“If I do not perform my Father’s works, do not believe me; but if I perform them, even if you do not believe me, believe the works, so that you may realize and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father.” John 10:32
As we approach Holy Week it is important for us to hear what Jesus is saying today. He’s been on a collision course with the Jewish leaders who continue to pick up stones. Jesus cleverly responds to them with a simple question, “I have shown you many good works from my Father. For which of these are you trying to stone me?” I’m sure they loved hearing that question. They respond that this is not because of his works, but for blasphemy, because they believe he is just a man trying to claim to be God.
We are so far removed from these actual events and we have had years of Church teachings that we can’t fathom how they are missing what is right in front of them. Yet, maybe they are just trying to make sense of it all and their preconceived ideas are blinding them to the truth. Jesus stresses that all the works He has been doing have been clear signs pointing to who He is. He wants them to see and understand, but it was hard for them. He knows that and that is why He has also put action behind His words. He says to them, “If I do not perform my Father’s works, do not believe me; but if I perform them, even if you do not believe me, believe the works, so that you may realize and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father.”
How does all of this apply to us today? Are we still waiting for a sign from the Lord to know what we are called to do or how we are to live? Are we blind to the things He is doing in our lives because they aren’t as big and powerful as we want them to be. Let us spend our Holy Week removing our blinders and looking for the works that God is doing in our lives. He is calling us to make this last week of Lent the best we’ve ever had. One where we focus on all that He did for us and how much He loves us.
Reflection Questions: Starting today, make a commitment to spend more time in Scripture. Let the Lord show you how much He loves you and consider the following: Do you understand what His passion truly means? Do you want to experience His suffering in a new way to see the depth of His love for you?
