As we enter into the first reading today, let’s remember the emotional state of Israel at this time. This people, in exile, feel as though their God has finally given up on them. They feel humiliated, lost, and abandoned. Is this not relatable?
I think it’s common, especially during this time of the year, to be keenly aware of what (or more likely who) is missing from our life. And that absence can make us feel similarly abandoned.
Today, God speaks to that feeling in the hearts of His people. He recognizes this longing that Israel has to return to a place of belonging and He provides a poetic consolation.
“…with great tenderness, I will take you back… My love shall never leave you.”
These words are for you. While we may endure seasons where it seems as if we’ve been abandoned by this world, our loving Father draws our eyes upward. He is there, just waiting for us to allow His love to console our broken heart. This Advent let’s give God the chance to show us that we are never truly alone.
