In the readings today, the great profit Isaiah challenges us to prepare a way for God. There was great turmoil in Judea at the time and Isaiah calls the people away from vain attempts to find security in human plans. Rather he proclaims, “Do not fear, here is your God!”
As we journey through Advent and prepare a way for God, Isaiah’s call still holds true today. We are called to prepare the wilderness of our souls for the coming of the Lord. What do we need to make the way straight? What wasteland shall we cleanse? How can we lift up our valleys and what mountains shall we make low in order to fully receive Christ this season?
Let the heavens be glad and the earth rejoice. Let the sea and what fills it resound. Let the plains be joyful and all that is in them. Let us sing to the Lord a new song. Welcome into your soul our loving and merciful Lord. He is faithful and He rejoices in the one who returns home.
