“For nothing will be impossible for God.” It’s exciting to read and marvel at the beautiful passage of the Angel Gabriel bringing God’s message to the Virgin Mary. With heavenly grace, Mary agrees to be the vessel that will bring the God-child into the world. Then, she is told the good news of her older relative, Elizabeth, who has been barren yet was miraculously with child. This is a well-known and beloved advent story of promise and hope!
Knowing that God’s character is the same yesterday, today, and always, it’s clear that He wants to work in our lives just as He did in the lives of Mary and Elizabeth. He changed the course of their lives, and He can change ours. Their story shows us that He can make the impossible possible for us, too, if only we allow it.
But…am I willing to let God be God?
I recall the years, even decades, of dealing with a stubborn vice. I was really only scratching at the surface of my sin in confession, not believing that God was big enough to be trusted with it and wanting to do things my way. The struggle was real. Finally, just recently, after much prayer and a great confession, God gave me the grace to choose obedience to his will. Really, it was a small act of submission. Immediately, he healed the root of my wound, bringing forth liberation and rejoicing. When I submitted to him and acted in obedience, he changed the course of my life, giving new promise and hope.
Today, take a moment to invite God to work in the details of your life as He did with Mary and Elizabeth, and with me. He wants to and He’s good at it. Nothing is impossible for Him.
